Business After School

Thursday, January 22, 2015 - 12:15am

CEDC is partnering with other local agencies to bring Business After School to the local area. The program helps youth and young adults ages 15 to 21 in Cowlitz, Clark and Wahkiakum counties learn about and explore high-growth industries in our community and gather information about career opportunities and skill they will need to get jobs.
Four times per year, an industry will be highlighted. Business After School launches February 16 to 18, 2015 with Engineering Week. Subsequent weeks of focus will be Healthcare in May, Manufacturing in October and Computer Science in December.
For Engineering Week, engineering firms and companies that employ large numbers of engineers will host a two-hour event for young adults at their location from 3 to 5 p.m., 4 to 6 p.m. or 5 to 7 p.m., providing company tours, hands-on activities and discussions about education, training, skills, job prospects and so forth.
The goal is to expose young people to career opportunities, industries and jobs they might not know exist and to help curtail projected labor shortfalls in many industries.
Engineering Week is open to youth and young adults interested in learning about careers in engineering. There is no cost to attend, however registrations will be required and space will be limited. Sign-ups will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, starting at the end of January. All youth under age 18 must be accompanied by and adult, with a maximum 10 students to one chaperone. Participants must arrange their own transportation. This is a great opportunity to help spark career interest in a young person.
Business After School partners include: Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council, Cowlitz Economic Development Council, Columbia River Economic Development Council, Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce, Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, Washington State University Vancouver, Clark College and Lower Columbia College.
